Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in a small town in the beautiful state of Vermont! I was an active kid, involved with sports from a young age, and always outside playing with my two sisters. I am a born again believe in Jesus Christ. My faith and relationship with Jesus have shaped my decisions and choices through my entire life. I attended Lyndon State College and received my BS in Business Administration. I played basketball all the way through high school and college and was the captain of my college team. I loved to read and write and was painfully shy as a kid! Sports and fitness are part of the reason that I was able to come out of my shell as I grew older. The event that was really a turning point for me was in 1998, I went on spring break to California with some friends. This was my first time being away from the East Coast! We went on the Price is Right show, and as God would have it, I won a car and even got to kiss Bob Barker! This was the moment that I realized a small-town girl from Vermont could go out and achieve some pretty cool things. It instilled a belief in me that was a catalyst for me going after other dreams and goals that were planted in my heart!
Tell us your fitness story.
In 2001 I had an “aha” moment. I had graduated from college and was living in Manchester, New Hampshire working a 9-5 office job. I. Was. Miserable. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. What would I be doing if I could wake up and love going to work? While on an elliptical at the gym, it occurred to me. THIS was my happy place. The next question was, how do I get a job at a gym?
Shortly after, I moved to Park City, Utah with some friends. As soon as I got there, I applied for a job at the local gym, I thought this could be an entry point for when I was certified and ready to start training people. I earned my first training certification in February 2002 through AFAA! I began training clients at the gym, but I was hungry for more. I started studying for my ACE certification, and I came across a program that was held in Maui by a group called Fitness Professionals International. In the fall of 2003, spent 6 weeks in Hawaii, completely immersed in education at the gym for personal training, group fitness instruction, yoga instruction, and nutrition. I soaked everything in and came back with confidence and excitement to be even better at this new career!
My training business in Park City was growing, but I still had a feeling there was more for me to do! I got a phone call one day while at the gym. It was a representative from Norwegian Cruise Lines. They would like to offer me a position as a Fitness Director on one of their ships!! I was so excited I jumped up on top of the front desk and couldn’t even speak so I just kept screaming!
I loved working on the ship. It was amazing to meet people from so many countries and cultures. To travel and teach fitness was a dream come true! BUT, despite this being one of the most fantastic experiences of my life so far, I was lonely. And that loneliness led to emotional eating. Binge eating in fact. I engaged in this behavior, every night, in my room, when no one was looking. And I began to gain weight.
Now even though I had been a personal trainer for a couple of years. I had NO CLUE about nutrition. I was one of those people who thought that I could eat whatever I wanted and “get away” with it because I exercised so much.
When I was living in Utah, I began having dreams and aspirations of being a fitness competitor. I LOVED Oxygen magazine. I couldn’t wait for each new issue. I cut out pictures of my favorite fitness women and plastered them all over my walls. How I would love to be one of them some day.
This dream followed me onto the cruise ship. But as the scale started going up, I became so angry at myself and for my hidden behaviors. I knew that I was not only sabotaging my health. I was sabotaging my dreams. But how could I stop? And what if I tried and failed?
One day on the ship, I stepped on the scale. It soared up to over 175 pounds. This was nearly 40 pounds heavier than I had been when I got on the ship only a short year prior. My emotional binge eating was scaring me. It felt out of control. I felt like this behavior OWNED me.
I got off the ship in February 2005. My little sister saw me for the first time after a year, and her jaw dropped. I knew I had to make a change.
I moved to San Antonio, Texas to live with my older sister. I got a job as a personal trainer at a gym there. I started talking about how I wanted to be a fitness competitor. But I still was making terrible eating choices and consuming a lot of alcohol.
It was July 5, 2005, that I finally had the “aha” moment that would change the trajectory of my life. A friend walked by that day and said “Hey Diana, I heard you wanted to do figure competitions? What are you waiting for?”
I didn’t have an answer to that question. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head. I had finally run out of excuses! It was time for me to start taking charge of my choices.
I signed up for my first show THAT DAY. I started changing my eating and exercise habits THAT DAY. I found a trainer who could help me learn the nutrition side of things THAT DAY.
And guess what. When I was committed to the goal. When missing out on my destiny and what could be, became MORE of a fear than the fear of change, I DID it. And nothing could side track me. The best part of it was, having a goal this powerful gave me the strength and discipline to overcome those emotional eating behaviors. It was an amazing feeling to know that that behavior didn’t define or own me any longer!! I also now knew HOW important nutrition was to goals. I knew that going forward the only way I would be able to help others achieve their goals, is if I was able to teach them how to take charge of their mind and eating habits.
18 weeks later, I stepped on stage at my first fitness competition. I had lost over 40 pounds and I was READY. I won! Every ounce of sweat and tears and hard work was worth it.
I went on to win the NPC Ronnie Coleman, then I competed at NPC Nationals in Chicago. Several organizations were opening up Fitness Model divisions, so I decided to make a change and compete with the FAME organization. I won my Pro card in my first show with them, then went on to win their North American Championships in 2007, and then I won the FAME Fitness Model World Champion title in 2008! The WBFF was an up and coming organization. I competed for my first time with the WBFF in 2008 and won the WBFF Pro Figure World Champion title.
One huge thing happened after this. A DREAM come true for me. It was my first chance to shoot for Oxygen magazine! Over the next few years I would have the opportunity to shoot with them several times and BE one of those girls that I always admired!
It was 2008 that God had another big plan for me! I had “met” Micah LaCerte aka “Hitch” via Myspace. We had communicated briefly as we had some mutual friends and shared mutual passions in the fitness industry. We were both going to attend the Olympia in Las Vegas in 2008 and decided that we would meet and say hello. Well, we met, and I knew instantly that this was the man God had intended for me.
Within 2 months of meeting, I gave up everything I was doing in Texas and moved to Micah’s town of Kansas City, Missouri. He was in the beginning phases of starting an online personal training company called Hitch Fit. Since we both had a passion for helping people transform, this was perfect timing! We launched Hitch Fit Online Personal Training in February 2009. It was just 6 short months later that we had the chance to open the first Hitch Fit Gym in Kansas City!
The focus of Hitch Fit has from the beginning been to help others transform their lives. We teach people how to train and eat in order to achieve their goals, but we are also focused on helping them adopt sustainable eating habits so they can keep their results for life!
Micah and I continued competing with the WBFF through 2011. This was also the year that we were married! We retired from the stage and poured our focus into building our business and transforming the lives of others. As of today, we have clients in 74 countries globally via the online and have aided clients from online and through the gyms in shedding over 325,000 pounds of fat. We now have two gym locations in the Kansas City area and a team of 20 transformation trainers!
That is how I came to be where I am today. It has been an amazing fitness adventure thus far, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store next!
What are your favourite exercises and areas to work out?
My favorite muscle group to train is legs. I do a lot of compound movements including squats, lunges and step ups. My favorite exercise of all time is the leg press. It has been since I began training at 14 years of age. I attribute my quad development to that machine!
Why do you choose Magnum?
The answer is TRUST. There are not many brands in the supplement world that I place my trust in, or that I would connect the Hitch Fit brand to. Micah and I were very cautious about taking the step to develop a partnership with a supplement brand that we trusted. We independently tested many brands and did our due diligence for over 3 years. We were so disheartened by the lack of integrity in the supplement world, and at the lack of quality in the products that are so widely consumed by people who are completely unaware of what they are putting in their bodies. When we told Markus that we were going to independently test Magnum products, to make sure that what it said on the label, was what was actually in the bottle, he said “Go for it!” And to take it a step further, he asked that we share the findings with him. If anything was off point with his brand, he wanted to know. I love Magnum. I love the products, and I love that it is a company I can feel confident referring others to.
Favourite Magnum supplements and why?
QUATTRO – TONIC – ACID – PRIMER – HI-5 – MAGNUM G – ROCKET SCIENCE – G-SPRING – CARNE DIEM – FIXATION
Magnum Quattro Protein powder is the best. It’s the first protein powder I have found that doesn’t cause stomach upset. I have a very sensitive stomach, so in the past I have actually not done a wide variety of supplements. This is another reason I’m so happy to have Magnum. My other favorites that are a part of my daily routine are Tonic, ACID, Primer Multi Vitamin, Hi5 and G. My very favorite are Rocket Science for a Pre-workout boost, and if I had to live on a desert island, and could only have one Magnum product, it would be G-Spring. I LOVE G-Spring and how it has improved my sleep! In addition to these, some others that are favorites are E-Brake (which I cycle on and off), Carne Diem, and Fixation (I’m 40…so I need some help keeping these joints moving! ☺ )
What are your goals for the future?
First off, I have to say that when I have goals and dreams, I submit them to the Lord. The biggest goal is to be better at trusting in Him, trusting His Word, and being obedient to do what He requests. I know that His plans for me are going to be better and far more than I could ever imagine! Ultimately, Lord willing, we will be able to continue to transform lives through Hitch Fit, both the gyms and the online personal training.
I turned 40 in 2017, so as I contemplate this new decade of life, I know that speaking and writing are in my future. I would like to be an inspiration and motivation especially to women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, who may think that positive change is not possible.
Micah and I support a school of children in Haiti through Love in Motion. I would like to be able to make even more of an impact on the lives of these children. I believe God will reveal to us how we can do this.
I also have a goal to be diligent about having a strong, faith based marriage and home, and to be a good cat mom to all of our crazy critters ☺
What advice can you give to anyone that wants to take control of their health?
My advice is, don’t procrastinate. Don’t be afraid of failing or you will never find out what you can truly become. If you fall down, get back up. If you need a plan, find a coach or support team who can guide you through the journey (Micah or myself would be happy to help if you decide we are a good fit for you!). I know what it’s like to live an unhealthy life in a body that I wasn’t comfortable in, and I know what it’s like to life a healthy life, in a body that I love. I can tell you first hand that THIS side is better. Discipline is FREEDOM. Changing my habits to healthy ones had an impact not only on what I looked like, it changed my confidence, it made me BELIEVE that I was capable of so much more. Without making those changes I would have missed out on so much good stuff. So, take a step, make a change, and go for it. You may be surprised what you can achieve when you decide and commit to living your BEST LIFE!
