The Science of Rehydration – Beyond Water

By Andy De Santis, RD | andytherd.com

Earlier this year I put it out there that I wanted to put more energy into my hydration practices and was grateful to NEKTR for making that easier and more enjoyable for me to accomplish.

As a dietitian who has spent a great deal of time on this topic with clients, there are two things I know to be true when it comes to hydration.

#1 You can have a great overall diet, and still suck at hydrating well (that’s me, but I’m working on it!)

#2 Hydration and rehydration are about more than just water intake – especially for active people.

Summer is here; it is very hot out and active people and pretty much anyone who spends large amounts of time outside are sweating on the daily.

Sports science tells us that, on average, one liter of sweat contains around 1,000 mg of sodium and lesser amounts of other electrolytes like potassium and magnesium.

How much people sweat varies between .3 to >2 L per hour  depending on various factors including personal traits, fitness levels, intensity of activity, length of the activity as well as the heat and how accustomed someone is to being in hot temperatures.

This means that if you are a heavy sweater even just spending time walking around briskly on a hot day, you could be losing close to ~500mg of sodium per hour.

That’s where Magnum Essentials REFRSH comes in.

Containing 500mg of sodium per sachet, REFRSH is a delicious new rehydration solution that also includes a combined 370 mg of potassium and magnesium as well as a meaningful hit of B vitamins too.

With my dietitian hat on, I can tell you that the addition of magnesium and potassium is useful not only for rehydration but for optimizing nutrition too – as many people in the population under consume these two magnificent minerals.

I see REFRSH as a highly effective and scientifically crafted rehydration solution, and that’s before we even get to the fact that the impeccable flavours make me eager to drink it.

My personal recommendation? Kiwi Lime!  I haven’t tasted anything like it in a while.

Both as a dietitian and a recreational soccer player, I'm excited for you to try this product. It’s one I’ll be keeping in my rotation for the foreseeable future.
